To end such an amazing year, it only seemed appropriate to cap it off with ten of our favorite moments from 2017. Check it out and be sure to watch our highlight here.
Our books are already filling up for 2018, more dreams are already playing out and we can't wait to see all our moms and families grow in the year ahead. 2018 you better look our because we have so many exciting things planned. Happy New Year Friends!
Thank you to all of the moms, families, partners, friends, fellow business owners and cheerleaders who made this year a success. We can't wait to see you in the New Year!
1. First Birth of the Year
Our first birth of the year was fast and furious and one we got to do together. The sweet baby girl was named Joy which was a foreshadowing for our year ahead. You can read her momma's birth story here. Happy almost one year Joy!
2. Diaper Drive and Community Events
This year our community events included a diaper drive, NICU event and a clothing collection. When we started FMD we knew it wasn't just our moms, but the entire Frederick community we wanted to serve.
3. Lobbying in Annapolis with Maryland Families for Safe Birth
Maryland Families for Safe Birth is an awesome organization that works to make birth and birth options more available for Maryland families. Heading down to join other people just as passionate about birth and meeting with our state representatives was productive and fulfilling. We are looking forward to this being a regular part of our work at FMD as we work on all levels in our community to improve birth.
4. Hosting our NEST Groups
One of our goals for 2017 was to serve moms more fully in the postpartum period. For that we created our NEST Frederick and NEST groups. We hosted our first NEST group September-November (Our final meeting will be in January, before we start our next group.) It is safe to say we truly grew to love these moms and following them through their postpartum journeys was not only fulfilling but fun.
5. Photographing Cesarean Sections
We feel strongly about supporting high risk moms and moms that have cesarean sections. This year we were given the access to photograph csections in some of the notoriously "strict" hospitals. This involved patience, flexibility and trust by both our moms and providers and we are grateful. One memorable csection was the birth of a sweet rainbow baby you can see above. It was a true family-centered cesarean we were honored to be a part of. We hope you had a great Christmas H-Family!
6. Sponsoring the Birth and Babies Fair
The Birth and Babies Fair is one of the largest Birth and Baby events in Frederick. We were a silver sponsor this year and had such a blast meeting so many new families and seeing many of our colleagues. Our Mom-osa bar was a hit and will definitely be making an appearance in 2018.
7. Learning about the new Frederick Birth Center
We may have done a happy dance and cried real tears when we heard Midwife Mychal Palia's news about opening the new Frederick Birth Center. We knew it had been in the works for some time but the official announcement made us so happy. We had even more fun getting partner up for the first Meet and Greet and hear all the new details about 2018. Read more here.
8. Growing Our Team
We had so much success this year and we were thankful to have Melissa and Mary join out team. Mary is the former vice president of the Birthing Circle and immediately made an impact in our NEST groups and with postpartum clients. Melissa helped us with the Birth and Babies Fair as well as NEST groups and introduced us to a local organization Young Lives. In 2018, we already have a new member hired and ready to start serving mommas and we can't WAIT for you to meet her.
9. Exceeding our 2017 goals
While doula work had been part of us prior to Frederick Moms and Doulas, we exceeded our goals for 2017 working as a team under the FMD brand. It was a building year of LOTS of work, learning and a whole lot of victories. We not only met, but exceeded our goals personally and professionally and 2018 is looking even brighter.
10. Attending our final births together
It is always special when we get to attend births together. The final births of the year though were something we could never have predicted. Having two moms (with different providers and who did not know each other) in the same hospital, delivering their babies in rooms right next to each other was something out of an awesome doula movie. We got to work together, cheer our moms on as well as each other and end the year with a lot of hugs and tears for a whirlwind finale to the year.
