FMD Community Meet Alison!
We met Alison in December and have since fallen in love. She is fun, dynamic and totally knows her stuff. Not only is she a birth doula, but she is a newborn care specialist and childbirth educator. We could say all the wonderful things we know, but we will let her introduce herself:)
Hi everyone! I am super excited to be able to introduce myself to everyone and begin working with these incredible women. I didn’t even know what a birth doula was until after the birth of my son almost 6 years ago. My husband and I took the “we got this” approach to childbirth and didn’t do the best job of fully educating ourselves. It wasn’t until after my son’s birth that I was fully able to process what had actually happened and realized that somewhere during the birth I had lost my voice and decision-making ability. We knew just enough to get by but not enough to be able to make our own informed choices that were rightfully ours to make. I vowed from that point on that I would become someone that could support women and their families during their childbirth journey so that they felt empowered and comfortable enough to make their own decisions. Shortly after that I quit my job as a high school Sports Medicine and Physical Education teacher and became a birth doula and childbirth educator. I haven’t looked back since and it has been one of the best decisions of my life.
Becoming an advocate and teacher for women during their pregnancy and birth experience has taught me so much more than I could ever imagine. All women and their families deserve to feel completely supported and informed from pregnancy to becoming parents. I feel blessed to be given the opportunity to be a part of such an amazing time in someone's life and I want to make it as positive and empowering as a woman deserves it to be. The past 6 years have opened my eyes to the strength that can come from people who are confident in their knowledge and supported appropriately during such an amazing and vulnerable time in their lives.
In addition to being a Doula, Childbirth educator, and Newborn Care Specialist, I am a mom to two children who keep me on my toes and teach me something new every day. When I am not busy chasing them around (which pretty much takes up most of the day!), I am taking spin and fitness classes, enjoying quality time with girlfriends and catching up on TV shows with my amazingly supportive husband. I am so excited to be a part of this community and work alongside such strong and powerful women. I look forward to supporting, empowering and educating you through this life changing journey!
