Hey everyone! It is so great to see you all here. I'm Alison and I'm the resident childbirth teacher for Frederick Moms and Doulas. I have been teaching different classes related to childbirth and babies for almost 6 years. I could come up with so many reasons as to why taking a class is super important for expecting moms and families. Unfortunately, a five page blog on childbirth classes isn’t the most ideal read for many people, so I came up with five things that you should get out of a good childbirth class. I went with the acronym PEACE to help me organize my thoughts, plus I think it’s just a good word and feeling to incorporate into any pregnant woman’s vocabulary! So here it goes….
Taking a class will help to make you and your partner feel more prepared for the entire childbirth event and mom’s remaining weeks of pregnancy. It’s very easy to OVER prepare on your own and not be quite sure of what you need/dont need, should be doing/shouldn’t be doing. A quick Google search to help you “prepare” can quickly turn into a 50 tabs open panic session! A childbirth class will give you all the tools you need to be fully ready for the birth of your child and do so in a non-overwhelming, organized way.
Hopefully this is a given! You will learn so much information regarding the childbirth process during your class. From labor positions and comfort measures to what to pack in your hospital bag, you will gain such a wealth of important information that you will most definitely need and use in the weeks leading up to the birth of your child and during the event itself. Being educated about this process will hopefully calm a lot of your nerves and give you the opportunity to have all of your questions answered.
So everyone has an idea or a plan for how they would like their birth to go, right? Because labor is such an unpredictable event it is helpful to know all of your options and choices when it comes to how things could happen. In a class you will learn all the different interventions, medications, positions and options that are available to you. From that you will be able to have a good idea of what you would like during the birth of your child. You will then also know your alternative options in the event things dont go exactly as planned.
We’ve all heard the saying “knowledge is power”! After taking a childbirth class you will have gotten a lot (I mean A LOT) of information. When things are made clearer to you and your questions are answered you will have a lot more confidence when you go into labor. That confidence is so important to mom, dad and anyone else that may be a part of your birth team. With confidence can come a sense of power, calmness and reassurance that you are ready to take on anything that may come at you during the birth of your baby. It is one less thing that you have to worry about so you can enjoy the experience rather than stressing out about it!
OK so this one was a stretch, but I think it works and is equally important! It is way easier to learn when things are engaging and fun. Hopefully the class you chose will be entertaining and allow you to have some well deserved and I’m sure needed laughs when it comes to pregnancy and labor.
I encourage you all to check your local class options and choose one that is best for you. I look forward to seeing you in a class soon! The first weekend childbirth class is March 24th and 25th and I am super excited to provide all my students with PEACE and a really fun weekend!
